The knee joint is a hinge joint and is mechanically one of the more simple joints in the body. It is vulnerable to injury based on its location, it is often in the wrong place at the wrong time. The positioning of the hip (which is dependent on the pelvis) and the position of the ankle and feet joint determine how forces are transferred through the knee. Do not be surprised if we spend little time at the knee your first week or two of therapy for this reason. The SymFit® Healthy Knee program addresses knee strengthening from a simple premise; ensure that the pelvis (neutral spine alignment), hip and ankle are in neutral position during all functional knee strengthening exercise to ensure equal distribution of load through the knee during functional activities. Your treatment will combine manual therapy around a functional conditioning program to break faulty loading patterns. Load tolerance based milestones are built into the program to ensure safe progression.
A common mis-conception regarding strengthening the knee is that you should not "lock" the knee in extension. This is not accurate and is how many fitness programs lack in serving your long term injury prevention knees. Yes, you should not lock the knee if you are squatting or leg pressing a large about of weight but during functional fitness it is an important component to maintaining neutral pelvis position. The tradition narrow fitness squat is also likely setting you up for faulty loading through the low back, hips and knees.
It takes about 2 weeks to restore access to neutral spine and hip alignment; another 2 weeks to condition you to perform you daily activities without faulty loading through the neck and low back. An additional month of group fitness classes is needed to condition you to perform your sport and recreational activities from neutral spine alignment.
